Title: VB now raping my processor
Post by: ShakesBar on August 22, 2015, 04:50:32 PM
Its literally wiping it clean. Its making the jukebox go deathly slow. Any ideas?

I only have VB and the touch screen software running. Its becoming almost unusable.

Just to add, it WAS scanning my music folders very quickly but all of a sudden it takes about half an hour. Nothing changed, all the same. The drives in use are now within the PC and not networked. I have set the hard drives to not sleep.

Hi Shakes

What OS is it, whats the spec of the PC... ?
ram, cpu speed, graphics card memory.

Had a bit of a check lastnight at work and although vb is stalling, cpu isn't crawling. Infact it's maxing at 25% so I was assuming the cpu was laggy and we all know what happened to the guy who assumed?

I can't pinpoint what's going on, the only other thing I can think of is the size of the video files. Averaging 80mb each.

The system is a dual core processor wwith 4g of ram. W7 2 drives. Music being on the second internal drive.

I've also since turned off all lights and ordered some led strip lighting. Put casings back on he pc and ordered some cabinet fans. Still stalls.

The size of the video files should not affect playback, not sure what you mean by 'stalling'.
Videobox has been tested for cpu usage so that shouldn't be a concern, your PC config looks ok but you didn't mention the graphics card which is important and does affect performance.

You should keep in mind also that the problem may be caused by another program or background/hidden service on the target PC (we have found this before with antivirus programs etc).

Im unsure, Im here now so can mess bout for a couple hours.

I have no anti-virus installed. Ill get the mouse on it and message you from the jukebox and provide screenshots. But in the meantime I will do a video of it stalling.

Thanks for your help

Decided it was easier photographing the screen.

Here is a couple of pics of bits and bobs. There is a video uploading to youtube about the stalling.

The example of this is, I hit any button and it freezes. Like its stuck and don't know what to do. I got as far as filming it freeze for 2 minutes before I gave up. The video would have been too long. No matter what i do VB won't work. I press the service button and nothing.

I hit CTRL+ALT+DEL and everything else is working fine?

Its bizarre that its only been doing it since I've uploaded the videos to it. Like I said before, if I scan music it takes about an hour just for the 500 songs on there, before with about 400 it did it in about 10 seconds. Its probably something simple, it always is.. just stumping me this one.

You might be onto something with the videos, I didn't realize you were scanning only 400, this should not take an hour...

What sort of videos are they, can you zip one up for me to try ?.

email sent.

I did realise though that it has slowed since I removed all of the track art? Would that do it? Should I add art to it all again?

Ok Matt, i downloaded a video (cool website, we should tell everyone), and it plays perfectly without hesitation.
I realized that it cant be the video because your pc seems to lock up before showing the track confirmation slider :-?, what did you mean with 'since I removed all of the track art' ?.

Try setting title cards to traditional, does that help ?.

Does the PC have an internet connection ?.

it does have an internet connection.

I will try that now.

It still has TV on it if you wanted to take a look, but let me check the classic view first and see if that helps.

Ok I've just tried, and its at lightening speed.

Would you be able to check to make sure I have all the settings correct?

None of the tracks have any art on them so it uses the art of the folders automatically but it seems to have a problem doing that?

Anyway, ill email you TV

in regards to the website, its the best video website on the net available for the UK market. HUUGE back catalogue and always has the latest songs before they are released.. and best of all its all legal! :)

I pay £40 a month for 100 tracks so goes back to the artists as it should.

Just to add, i didn't actually try putting a track on... I have now and its doing it again.

I can only think my best option is to put artwork on each track and see what that does?

Thanks for your help here.

Will re-assess the cover pic thing too and check if thats something that may have contributed. Will re organise the music (i can't wait cos it not going to take long with what i have planned for upload...) <not sarcasm - not>

Lets get this finished cos its taking up too much of my time at the moment and the wife is not pleased lol :D

Ok, I think we found the problem, the video files are quite large and there were too many of them in just 1 folder so the PC was struggling.

The fix is to separate the files into reasonable genres or subgenre folders of about 20 to 30 in each, this will make for good browsing of your music library :-)

I also think it would benefit me putting them through handbrake to shrink them. Thats a long winded task but it'll probably be worth it.

Thanks for your help, always appreciate it.

Handbrake reduces size by 33% and retains quality. Takes about 5 minutes per song, so will leave the laptop on overnight to get the ball rolling! :)

I would like to add to this thread, in the hope this may help someone else.

Converting the files did allow Videobox to scan a little faster, but didnt help the overall speed of videobox.

I had a powercut yesterday which knocked out my jukebox. When I rebooted VideoBox informed me that no license was found. After uninstalling and re-installing there was still no success. I copied the error code to a text document and followed the folderpath (through hidden folders) to the correct file, deleted the parent folder and reinstalled.

Had to change a few settings to put it how I wanted but magically its made the whole thing go as fast as lightening! All works hunky dory.

I must have changed a setting or something that put something in an infinate loop? Its the only thing I can think of?

Hi Matt

Thanks for sharing your fixes on the forum, it really does help other people when they get stuck  :D

Ps: if you ever see the 'No license found error' you can just re-install Videobox over the top of your existing install and it will write a new license for you  8)
