instant sheller
« on: April 03, 2012, 11:29:37 AM »
Hey guys, a few years ago i made myself a mame cabinet and found a handy little program called "instant sheller"..........its basically hide windows and sets videobox.exe to open automatically when windows starts up.

the beauty of this is i can make my own custom boot screen "Awesomex Jukebox.....now loading" and it opens directly to videoboxes main screen with no trace of welcome screens or log ins.

its can be found here> http://www.gameex.com/Community/InstantShellerandshellingguide.aspx

just wondering how everyone else has hidden windows start up on their jukeboxes??

I'll post a video later on of what it looks like :D

Hi stampy I did this on my tablet pc.
The only thing was I had trouble unstalling and going back to a normal working pc. To be honest I didn't try that hard! So I just ran off a new copy of the hard drive I had backed up :)
Have you tried uninstalling ?

Shelling windows can be difficult and is diffrent on xp and vista (its harder than you think), there are custom programs you can buy etc, but..

Just a simple suggestion for what its worth, why not set VBX to autostart (in vbx control panel), then clear all the icons from the desktop and then set the taskbar to autohide.  ;D

yeah to uninstall it you have to run instant sheller.exe again..........hit alt, ctrl, del, then task manager, then file, new task and type explorer.exe.

this will open the taskbar and icons again. then find the instant sheller program and double click it, it will pop saying undo all changes!.....Sorry guys i should've explained that first.

Steve, i did what you suggested first time around which worked great but it still shows the xp boot screen. Have to admit the sheller program is quite glitchy, i had issues with it logging into the default admin acoount and not my regular admin account for some time.

OK heres my first attempt with instant sheller>

http://youtu.be/U7RM4gl54uo

And my second attempt with out sheller, i had to a few things manually:

disable screensaver,
windows sounds,
windows pop ups,
select auto launch in VBX,
allow user to log in automatically (no password)
disable welcome screen
hide desktop icons,
auto hide task bar
then change my desktop pic to the "now loading" picture

I also installed a cool little program called bootskin, which lets you add your own boot logo instead of the XP one.

Had a little issue with the "loading personal settings" box flashing up for a second but disabled it in the registry quite easily.

Option 2 seems to be the better way to go, as i said beofre sheller is quite glitchy and hard to undo if you dont knwo what you're doing.

We were actually going to build a shelling system into JBP, but we didnt integrate that feature because we realised that support requests would probably go throught the roof.
Only yesterday I had someone email me who was desperate because he had put JBP into party mode and didnt know the default pin to get back out, (even though the pin is documented everywhere (in the program, in the manual & on the forum posts), imagine if they shelled their PC and couldnt get the desktop back lol  ;D.

lol, steve i feel your pain mate..........having said that though, a little doc explaining how to hide it the simple way would be pretty cool :)

open VBX set to auto launch
hide task bar
hide icons
download bootskin
ENJOY!!

theres a few other things i had to do to make it decent but nothing i couldnt find on google in a bout 45 minutes. I wrote a little .txt for myself so i could do it again for the other 15 machines

HIDE WINDOWS

1: disable screen saver
2: make "now loading" pic as desktop background image
3: auto hide task bar
4: hide icons
5: hide "now loading personal settings" box - disable status msg>
Step 1: Click Start > Run > regedit
   Step 2: Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ policies \ system \
Step 3: In the right pane, find and double click DisableStatusMessages
Step 3b: If you do not have it, click Edit > New > DWord Value. Name the new DWord as DisableStatusMessages
Step 4: Double click DisableStatusMessages and change the value to 1 and hit OK
6: install bootskin.exe
7: add bootskin (download from http://www.wincustomize.com/explore/bootskins_xp)
8: disable taskbar slide
   1:control panel\system\advance\performance\visual
2:uncheck fade or slide menus into view
9: set VBX to auto launch
10: disable windows sounds

I'm sure it'll help anyone else trying WITH XP! to accomplish the same thing :D
